Do you know that 1 in 3 women have some type of pelvic floor dysfunction?

After amazing feedback from past participants, we’re delighted to welcome Michelle Lyons, Women’s Health Integrative Physio and co-founder of the Women’s Health Physiotherapy Group back to the studio to teach this intermediate level workshop again.
This full day workshop is for therapists and movement professionals with an interest in learning about and deepening their understanding of female pelvic floor function (and dysfunction) for their own personal education and exploration.
Developed in South Africa by Physiotherapist Douglas Heel, Be Activated is an incredible technique that identifies how, why and where our bodies develop compensation patterns. It then interrupts poor neuromuscular patterns and delivers a systematic method to reawaken muscles that have become confused and switched off.
The technique is used by pro athletes, fitness professionals, sports coaches and therapists worldwide. It has a strong mind, body connection and can be adapted for any type of movement based activity. Be Activated improves breathing, it can quickly break common patterns of movement dysfunction which is crucial for injury prevention and muscle imbalances.
Join us for a two hour workshop on Saturday 9th of September 2018 at 2pm with Bev Porrino, with a specific focus on how Pilates and movement teachers can use Be Activated to look at muscle usage patterns.
We are delighted to announce that Martha Peterson will be with us in Dublin in November 2017 to teach a Hanna Somatics Fundamentals Immersion Course.
This introductory course is for anyone with an interest in learning about or seeking to deepen their understanding of Hanna Somatics for their own personal education and exploration. No prior experience or training is required to participate.
Hanna Somatic Education (also known as Clinical Somatics) is a safe, gentle and common sense approach to eliminating chronic muscle pain and improving movement for the long term. It is scientifically-based sensory motor training that teaches you how most chronic muscle pain develops, and what to do to restore full nervous system control of both muscles and movement. The end result is improved awareness, balance and control, as well as efficiency and joy of movement. You learn to reverse the root cause of most chronic muscle pain – the way in which you have unconsciously adapted to the stresses of your life – so you can prevent pain and movement limitation in the future.
If you’d like to know a little more prior to booking a two day course, come to our Introduction to Somatics
workshop on Saturday November 4th at 2pm. All proceeds of this workshop go to the Simon Community.
This three-day certificate course presents a Physical Therapy approach to working with clients who have injuries, physical limitations, or movement dysfunctions. Focusing primarily on the cervical and lumbar spine, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle and foot, the course covers functional anatomy, biomechanics and a review of current literature. Specific injuries and pathologies, such as disc disease, post-surgical conditions, rotator cuff syndrome, tendinopathies and osteoarthritis, are examined. Students learn about precautions and/or contraindications for these conditions, as well as exercise options and modifications to the original BASI Pilates repertoire. Course participants learn safe ways to work with clients who suffer from some of the most commonly encountered pathologies and injuries, via lectures, discussions, demonstrations and practice.
This is part of our Meet Our Visiting Instructor Series where you get to read about some of the visiting teachers and educators to our studio.
Meet Michelle Lyons, a chartered physiotherapist who specialises in integrative Women’s Health and pelvic health.
Michelle provides regular continuing education and workshops in our studio here in Dublin.
What have you been up to recently?
After a busy year teaching all over the world, from Connecticut to California to Capetown, I’m enjoying some down time with friends and family and writing new women’s health courses for next year. I can’t help it – I’m passionate about women’s health!!
How long have you been a movement teacher / educator and what inspired you to become one??
As a physiotherapist, I have 25 years of clinical experience and my toolbox includes not only orthopaedic and pelvic health expertise but also a strong interest in Oncology rehab, using manual therapy, exercise prescription (yoga, Pilates, strength training, holistic core restore programming) as well as integrative nutrition and mindbody medicine. I lecture and teach nationally, internationally and online at a post graduate and post doctoral level – I’m all about spreading the word about good pelvic health!
What are your top three tips for clients and students to start a movement practice?
As Pema Chodron, the beloved Tibetan Buddhist teacher writes ‘start where you are’ and be kind to yourself when starting any new practice – I always recommend starting with the breath – it’s the foundation for good pelvic health. Continue reading →
