Meet Madeline Black, educator, author and movement teacher.
Madeline will be teaching a 5 Day Intensive based on her book Centred in our studio here in Dublin in October 2018.
What have you been up to recently?
Researching and writing a presentation on Gait Patterning for the Cognition and Movement Conference being held at Harvard in July 2018.
How long have you been a movement teacher / educator and what inspired you to become one?
30 years beginning with dance, fitness, Pilates, yoga, Gyrotonic then expanding into movement science. The human body inspires me!
What are your top three tips for clients and students to start a movement practice?
1. All movement is good so move in any way.
2. Be attentive to your body, focus on feeling the movement
3. There is no wrong way to move, we all have our unique pattern of movement
What are your top three tips for clients and students to stay motivated and consistent with their movement practice?
1. You only have this one body and it needs to be cared for to be useful in your life time
2. Movement gives you joy, so enjoy yourself
3. Find a partner to share in the movement activities, each of you will pull the other along
Describe your teaching style in less than ten words
Clear, simple, functional.
Where are your three favourite places in the world?
Ireland, my heritage is from there; Sea of Cortez, Baja Mexico and New York City.
What are the top three things on your bucket list?
I wish to live with the present and do not have nor wish to have a bucket list.
Tell us about someone who inspires you
Jean Claude West has inspired me for 25 years. He is a movement genius and created many of the apparatus we all use today in our studios.
When you’re not teaching what do you do for kicks?
Archery and hiking.
Tell us one last thing we might not know about you
I appear in Prince’s movie Purple Rain.
