Meet our visiting instructor…Mumu aka Muriel Morwitzer

This is part of our Meet Our Visiting Instructor Series Mumu Morwitzerwhere you get to read about some of the visiting teachers to our studio. Meet Muriel aka Mumu Morwitzer, Senior Educator and Managing Director of art of motion academy® Australia.

What have you been up to recently?

Traveling the world and teaching what I am most passionate about; holistic movement and art of motion’s Contemporary Pilates methodology and Slings Myofascial Training concept as well as Anatomy Trains in Motion – all of them developed by Karin Gurtner.

How long have you been a Pilates teacher and what inspired you to become one?

Since 1999, with a few breaks in between (having our two children) and full time again since 2007. What inspired me: As a dancer, skier and kayaker I had suffered my fair share of injuries and was told at 21 I would never dance again. I rehabilitated myself with Pilates and enjoy all of the above to this day and with more skills. My biggest inspiration and most movement-life-changing encounter was meeting Karin in 2007. This changed everything, the way I teach and look at the body and myself. Having been able to learn from Karin and become a lecturer for art of motion has been the best possible challenge and is forever inspiring.

What’s your favourite Pilates exercise? Why?

Roll Down. Lengthening and eccentrically strengthening the upper portion of my Superficial Back line feels amazing and is a very functional movement that I love having in my repertoire.

If Joe Pilates was still alive, what would you ask him?

Are you happy with how your work and method has helped shape the movement world of today?

What are your top three tips for clients and students for progressing their Pilates practice?

Be open minded, keep practicing whilst having fun, take the opportunity to tap into your full potential.

Describe your teaching style in less than ten words

Passionate, all about the clients and making it fun and applicable.

Where are your three favourite places in the world?

  • Nepal
  • Switzerland
  • Australia

What are the top three things on your bucket list?

Diving with whale-sharks, going back to Nepal with my kids, going skydiving once more.

Tell us about someone who inspires you Mumu and Karin art of movement academy

Karin Gurtner, my friend, mentor and teacher who developed Contemporary Pilates and Slings Myofascial Training. Her continuous efforts of bettering her courses and teaching as well as continuously learning are so very inspirational. I count myself very lucky to be in her teaching team and that I am encouraged to learn more all the time.

When you’re not teaching what do you do for kicks?

Going for long walks, lying at the beach reading (mostly work related books…which I love), dancing (to a good band, or DJ, or in my own kitchen) and having quality time with my family and dear friends.

Tell us one last thing we might not know about you

I love hitting the ski slops hard and fast (maybe you already knew that). It is just like flying to me and gives me one of the most exhilarating feelings. Thanks to Slings Myofascial Training I can keep up with my 3 brothers (all ski instructors) even though I sometimes only get to ski once every 18 months.

Mumu is back with us in Dublin in 2018 to teach Slings in Motion and Slings Essentials I.
