Introduction

Offering strength, self-esteem and quality of life to breast cancer survivors is key. Exercise may be the last thing a client feels like doing after breast cancer surgery. Exhaustion, painful swelling, and the adjuvant treatments can make them feel even worse. All they want to do is rest. In the past, that’s exactly what Doctors recommended. However, recent studies indicate a link between moderate physical exercise and improved quality of life for breast cancer sufferers.

This program, designed and taught in Dublin by Doreen Puglisi, is dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle and positive body image to all breast cancer survivors. The Pink Ribbon Program will stretch and strengthen the shoulder, chest, back and abdominal muscles, allowing women to regain full range of motion to those areas affected by breast cancer surgery. The program is suitable whether their surgery was recent or several years ago and accommodates all fitness levels.

This course is open to physiotherapists, occupational therapists, Pilates instructors, lymphedema treatment specialists, and nurses.

Objectives

• Demonstrate an understanding of the different surgeries, including breast reconstruction and the impact of these surgeries on physical mobility
• Understand the signs and symptoms of upper extremity lymphedema and axillary web syndrome
• Demonstrate an understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer
• Perform an upper quadrant screening and evaluation for the breast cancer patient.
• Develop a comprehensive rehabilitation program using a Pilates-based approach including movement sequencing specific for the breast cancer survivor.
• Develop Periodisation Principles and the application of these principles to each survivor’s exercise program.

Duration

14 hours over a weekend – Saturday and Sunday 23rd & 24th of May 2015.
