Pilates exercises are done on either on a mat on the floor, or on exercise equipment developed by Joseph Pilates.
Group Mat Classes can be a good starting place for beginners because of its emphasis on learning how to control your muscles during exercise and also because of the availability of classes.
Group classes have a maximum of 10 people per class and courses usually run over a two month period – i.e. Jan/Feb or Mar /Apr.
I don’t currently offer drop ins, but if you would like to attend classes and have challenges in relation to being available for a course due to work commitments etc, let me know and we can try and work something out.
Group Mat classes are only suitable for those who are injury free. If you have back pain or other joint or muscle issues or underlying conditions, one on one sessions will be more appropriate for your body.
Lunchtime group classes are 45 minutes and evening classes are for one hour.
What level class should I be doing?
Beginners
These classes are suitable for those with limited or no experience with Pilates. I suggest everyone starts here no matter what level of fitness you have so you become familiar with the basic principles of Pilates prior to moving on to a more challenging level.
Level 1
I suggest you have completed at least one course of Pilates prior to joining a Level 1 class. These classes build on the Basic Principles learnt in the beginners courses and add more exercises challenging stability, strength and balance.
Level 2
Level 2 classes progress onwards from the exercises learned in Level 1 where we start to introduce more challenging exercises from the Stott Pilates Intermediate exercise program. Stamina and co-ordination are added to the challenges overcome during classes.
Level 3
Level 3 classes are only suitable for those who have been practising Pilates for a number of years, who are injury free and who have completed all of the Essestial level and Intermediate level exercises.
You should aim to practice Pilates 2 – 3 times per week – once in class and then an appropriate home program. The more you can put your own practice in the greater the benefits. If you would like to develop a home program speak to your instrucutor about booking a one on one.
